In a distant forest in the east an aged giantess brought into the world a whole brood of young wolves whose father was Fenrir. One of these monsters chased the sun to take possession of it. The chase was for long in vain, but each season the wolf grew in strength, and at last he reached the sun. Its bright rays were one by one extinguished. It took on a blood red hue, then, entirely disappeared. (When the sun moves from an elliptical, ‘close orbit’, to a circular orbit, ‘further away’, with longer winter periods and a very short summer period, this is also compounded due to a greater angle of obliquity from the pole of the ecliptic. i.e. the angle of Earth’s rotation; so snow builds up and does not melt, causing an ice age. Author)
Thereafter the world was enveloped in hideous winter snow-storms descended from all points of the horizon. War broke out all over the Earth. Brother slew brother, children no longer respected the ties of blood. It was a time when men were no better than wolves, eager to destroy each other. Soon the world was going to sink into the abyss of nothingness... (Ancient Norse myth)
Meanwhile, the wolf Fenrir, whom the gods had long ago so carefully chained up, broke his bonds at last and escaped. He shook himself and the world trembled. The ash tree Yggdrasil (envisaged as the axis of the Earth) was shaken from its roots to its topmost branches. Mountains crumbled or split from top to bottom, and the dwarfs who had their subterranean dwellings in them sought desperately and in vain for entrances so long familiar but now disappeared.
Abandoned by the gods, men were driven from their hearths and the human race was swept from the surface of the Earth. The Earth itself was beginning to lose its shape. Already the stars were coming adrift from the sky and falling into the gaping void. They were like swallows, weary from too long a voyage, who drop and sink into the waves. The giant, Surt, set the entire Earth on fire; the universe was no longer more than an immense furnace. Flames spurted from fissures in the rocks; everywhere there was the hissing of steam. All living things, all plant life, were blotted out. Only the naked soil remained, but like the sky itself the earth was no more than cracks and crevasses... (Ancient Norse myth)
Yet not all men perished in the great catastrophe... Enclosed in the wood itself of the ash tree Yggdrasil – which the devouring flames of the universal conflagration had been unable to consume – the ancestors of a future race of men had escaped death. In this asylum they had found that their only nourishment had been the morning dew.
Thus it was that from the wreckage of the ancient world a new world was born – Slowly the earth emerged from the waves. Mountains rose again and from them streamed cataracts of singing waters. . . (Ancient Norse myth)
Phaethon Apollo Myth (Brief)
‘Soon the fiery horses felt how their reins were in an unpractised hand. Rearing and swerving aside, they left their wonted way; then all the earth was amazed to see that the glorious sun, instead of holding his stately, beneficent course across the sky, seemed to speed crookedly overhead and to rush down in wrath like a meteor...’ (How Phaeton, child of the sun, took over his father’s role of guiding the sun along its path. Graeco-Roman myth)
Phaethon Apollo Myth (Full Version)
To prove his worth as a son of Apollo, Phaethon, asked his father to grant him one wish, to which Apollo said, “Anything I can. I swear by the river Styx, an oath sacred to the gods.” Phaethon replied, “I wish to drive the sun across the sky. All by myself. From dawn till night.”
Apollo’s roar of anger shattered every crystal goblet in the great Castle. (The shattering and breaking up of the gigantic ice wall and polar ice due to torsional effects upon the surface crust from oral tradition. Author )
Having sworn a sacred oath Apollo had no option and at last relented. He tried one last time though, to reason with Phaethon. “Will you not withdraw your request – allow me to preserve my honor without destroying the Earth? Ask me anything else and I will grant it. Do not ask me this.”
“I have asked sire, and you have promised. And the hour for dawn comes, and the horses are unharnessed. The sun will rise late today, confusing the wise.” replied Phaethon.
“They will be more than confused when this day is done,” said Apollo. “Come.”
The sun chariot was an open shell of gold. Each wheel was the flat round disk of the sun as it is seen in the sky. Apollo spoke to his horses, “Good lads, good horses, go easy today, my swift ones. Go at a slow trot and do not leave the path. You have a new driver today.”
The great horses dropped their heads to his shoulders and whinnied softly, for they loved him.
At first things went well. The great steeds trotted easily along their path across the high blue meadow of the sky. Phaethon felt himself the lord of the sky. But suddenly there was a change. The chariot was swinging wildly to and fro; the pace was faster; he had lost control. The horses were directing the course. They were the masters. No one but Apollo could command them. They left the middle road and rushed where they chose, up, down, to the right, to the left. They nearly wrecked the chariot against the scorpion; they brought up short and almost ran into the crab. By this time the poor charioteer was half fainting with terror, and he let the reins fall.
That was the signal for still more mad and reckless running. They galloped up, up, to the very top of the sky. (A sudden obliquity change in Earth’s spatial orientation, caused by a shift in mass over thousands of years on the Earth’s surface due to ice built up at the polar regions, created a drastic crustal wobble. Author)
And the people on Earth saw the sun shooting away until it was no larger than a star. Darkness and cold came as the Earth froze, then the horses plunged headlong down; they set the world on fire. The highest mountains were the first to burn, Ida and Helicon, where the muses dwell, Parnassus, and heaven-piercing Olympus. Down their slopes the flame ran to the low lying valleys and the dark forest lands, until all things everywhere were ablaze. (Severe volcanic activity caused by the crustal displacement and change in orientation culminating in a wrenching and tearing of the crust, settling it into a new position of homeostasis, where planetary surface mass reaches equilibrium. Author) The springs turned into steam; the rivers shrank. Mother Earth, too, could bear no more. She uttered a great cry which reached up to the gods. Looking down from Olympus the gods saw that they must act quickly if the world was to be saved.
As a chastened, burning, Phaethon and the chariot smashed across the sky from horizon to horizon, making the day flash on and off, people who were left alive were bewildered by the light and darkness following each other so swiftly. (As the crust wobbled and lurched upon its gyroscopic pedestal, portions were thrust alternately into darkness and light, and from temperate regions to polar regions. From an Earth perspective, these changes occurred because of the sun’s erratic movements. In China it was reported that the stars changed their relative positions. Author)
As darkness came, so did the cold. The Earth froze hard. Rivers froze, and oceans. Boats were caught fast in the ice in every sea. It snowed in the jungle. Marble buildings cracked. It was impossible for anyone to speak; breath froze on the speakers’ lips. And in village and city, in the field and in the wood, people died of the cold. And the bodies piled up where they fell, like firewood. (Imagine the sun rising late because of torsional and centrifugal forces acting upon redistributed mass on the Earth’s surface, until it reaches a point where change is unavoidable and the Earth once again needs to attain stability. A two mile thick polar ice cap starts to crack because of the stress and strain placed upon it. The wildly oscillating Earth thrusting temperate areas into polar regions, the ground cracking, mountains spewing out molten lava. Rivers and lakes disappearing because of the shifting lithosphere; the Earth’s crust having broken free of the viscosity of the magma layer and athenosphere after reaching the point of maximum friction tolerance. The Earth’s crust then grinds to a halt after groaning in displeasure at the forces it has been subjected to. . . It would seem from the ancients’ perspective that the sky had fallen, and, that the sun had girrated wildly in the heavens. Author)
Jove looked upon the Earth. He saw the runaway horses of the sun and the hurtling chariot. He saw the dead and dying, the burning forests, the floods, the weird frost. . . Jove then seized his thunderbolt and hurled it at the rash, repentant driver. It struck him dead, shattered the chariot and made the maddened horses rush down into the sea.
Phaethon, all on fire, fell from the chariot through the air to the earth. The naiads, in pity for him, so bold and so young to die, buried him and carved upon the tomb:- Here Phaethon lies who drove the sun-god’s chariot. Greatly he failed, but he had greatly dared. (The Phaethon and Apollo myth: Greek mythology)
“And it must occur in that day, in the day when Gog comes in upon the soil of Israel,’ is the utterance of the sovereign Lord Jehovah, ‘that my rage will come up into my nose. And in my ardor, in the fire of my fury, I shall have to speak. Surely in that day a great quaking will occur in the soil of Israel. And because of me the fish in the sea and the flying creatures of the heavens and the wild beasts of the field and all the creeping things that are creeping on the ground and all mankind that are upon the surface of the ground will be bound to shiver, and the mountains will actually be thrown down and the steep ways will have to fall.’”
“ ‘And I will call forth against him throughout all my mountainous region a sword,’ is the utterance of the sovereign Lord Jehovah. ‘Against his own brother the sword of each one will bring myself into judgement with him, with pestilence and with blood; and a flooding downpour and hailstones, fire and sulphur I shall rain down upon him and his bands and upon the many peoples that will be with him. And I shall certainly magnify myself and sanctify myself and make myself known before the eyes of many nations; and they will have to know that I am Jehovah.’ (Ezekiel 38: 18-23)
While he was sitting upon the Mount of Olives, the disciples approached him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your presence and of the conclusion of the system of things?” And in answer Jesus said to them: “Look out that nobody misleads you; for many will come on the basis of my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will mislead many. You are going to hear of wars and reports of wars; see that you are not terrified. For these things must take place, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be food shortages and earthquakes in one place after another. All these things are a beginning of pangs of distress. (Matthew 24: 3-8)
You should remember the sayings previously spoken by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles. For you know this first, that in the last days there will come ridiculers with their ridicule, proceeding according to their own desires and saying: “Where is this promised presence of his? Why, from the day our forefathers fell asleep (in death), all things are continuing exactly from creations beginning.”
For, according to their wish, this fact escapes their notice, that there were heavens from of old and an Earth standing compactly out of water and in the midst of water by the word of God: and by those (means) the world of that time suffered destruction when it was deluged with water. But by the same word the heavens and the earth that are now are stored up for fire and are being reserved to the day of destruction of the ungodly men. (2 Peter 3: 2-7)
“Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. (Matthew 24: 29)
And then the sign of the son of man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the Earth will beat themselves in lamentation, and they will see the son of man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. (Matthew 24: 30)
“Concerning that day and hour nobody knows, neither the angels of the heavens nor the Son, but only the Father. For just as the days of Noah were, so the presence of the son of man will be. For as they were in the days before the flood, eating and drinking, men marrying and women being given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark; and they took no note until the flood came and swept them all away, so the presence of the son of man will be. (Matthew 24: 36-39)
And I saw when he opened the sixth seal, and a great earthquake occurred; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the entire moon became as blood, and the stars of heaven fell to the Earth, as when a fig tree is shaken by a high wind casts its unripe figs. And the heaven departed as a scroll that is being rolled up, and every mountain and (every) island were removed from their places. (Revelation 6: 12-14)
And the kings of the Earth and the top-ranking ones and the military commanders and the rich and the strong ones and every slave and (every) free person hid themselves in the caves and in the rock masses of the mountains. And they keep saying to the mountains and to the rock masses: “Fall over us and hide us from the face of the One seated on the throne and from the wrath of the lamb, because the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to stand?” (Revelation 6: 15-17)
